Methods to Identify Staffing Needs and Developing or Updating Staffing Plans for Traffic Management Systems (TMS)

In addition to traditionally trained Department of Transportation (DOT) staff consisting of traffic engineers and designers, planners, and managers, the workforce and staff supporting the next generation of TMS operations can benefit from a broader range of backgrounds, particularly in more technology-focused areas such as database specialists, communications engineers and technicians, and software and application developers. Staffing and training programs with a greater focus on modern TMSs can help to recruit, develop and sustain the knowledge and talent needed for effective TMS operations, including collaboration and coordination of staff across responsibilities. This project will capture agency practices and issues to consider in support of developing or updating staffing plans, including resources to help define and support staffing and funding needed to meet current and expected future needs of the next generation of their TMS and its supporting subsystems.
